For the first time since the Kelly Lass invitational, the Huskies Softball returned home to the Husky Dome to start NSIC play against the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs. Last week, St. Cloud State competed in the Missouri Western Hy-Vee Classic collecting a pair of close wins against Northeastern State and Central Missouri. The cardinal and black took that momentum back to the frigid north for their first matchup of the year against the Bulldogs.
In game one, both teams exchanged blows in the middle innings, but defense stood tall. Fireworks exploded in the fifth off a three-run homerun from Senior Jasmine Estrada (2) to push the Husky led to three (4-1). Both teams exchanged a run in the sixth inning but strong pitching from Junior Trinity Junker helped St. Cloud State hold on in game one of the double headers. Junker hurled her way to the complete game only allowing five hits and collected five strikeouts on 123 pitches.
In game two, the Husky offense exploded in the first inning with seven runs in the opening frame. Senior Sydney Trees opened the scoring with a two-run blast, that was followed by untimely walks and errors by the Bulldogs in the field allowing four more runs to follow in the first. UMD struck for four unanswered throughout the next six innings, but more errors hindered any chances of the Bulldogs coming back in game two. The Huskies finished the day with an 8-4 win in route to picking up their first two conference wins of the year.
After the two wins in Husky Dome, SCSU Softball improves their record to 14-9 and will stay home with a pair of double headers on April 2nd and 3rd against Minot State and UMary with both games scheduled to be played at Selke Field.
