Skate Unity Fundraiser creates art and opportunities for area skaters

in Events/Gallery/Lifestyle/The Shot by

The Skate Unity fundraiser, hosted by The Youth Shelter Supply (YSS), started on March 24 and ran through Saturday evening, April 1 at The White Horse in downtown St. Cloud. For the 11th year, the event marks an opportunity for local artists to showcase their skills while helping others in the community. YSS handed out blank skateboards for artists to design on and the finished products were put up for sale during a silent auction all week. All of the money raised from the auction this year will go towards the St. Cloud Skate Camp – a free summer camp for kids learning to skate. We caught up with some of the artists to find out more about their motives and designs. Art was something which was long a part of many of the artist’s lives, and the event gave them an opportunity to further express themselves. Madison Holler, a…

Local boarders claimed prizes at ‘Campus Cruz’

in Local Sports/Sports by

The Youth Shelter Supply’s “Campus Cruz” attracted nearly 50 local skateboarders and longboarders on Saturday. Boarders were invited to stop by the shop for a barbecue behind the shop, and then just around 3 p.m. the Cruz, a campus-wide scavenger hunt, began with maps being handed out so boarders could take off. After filling up on hot dogs, chips and water, boarders didn’t stick around long. Co-owner Mike Pettit helped hand out the maps that led to a variety of hidden prizes. After grabbing the map, one by one, boarders sped out of the parking lot and took to the streets of St. Cloud. Youth Shelter Supply employee Lane Kloskowski spent roughly an hour hiding the prizes around campus. “I hid them pretty good,” said Kloskowski, who is also a business major at SCSU. Kloskowski went from the north side of campus to the south side, taping up gift cards that had the…

Skateboard art show “SKATE UNITY” continues this spring

in A & E/Events by

The Youth Shelter Supply, a local skateboard and snowboard shop who sponsors the event every year, continued SKATE UNITY this spring to help different charities and organizations in the local community. SKATE UNITY is a skateboard art show that was originally created to bring together some of the Midwest’s best artists to raise money to build the St. Cloud Skate Plaza on 33rd Ave. S.–which has been successfully completed. Now in their nineth year, Skate Unity is featuring 24 local artists, who gave their talent and time to create pieces of art on skateboards. For the past few years the proceeds went to buying new skateboards for the Boys & Girls club in St. Cloud, but this year the earnings will help fund Skate Camp–a free skateboard camp this summer for local kids who want to try out skateboarding at the St. Cloud Skate Plaza. The display and silent auction opened up at The White…
