Huskies win home-opener, improve to 2-0 on the season

in SCSU Sports/Sports by

After a sluggish start, the St. Cloud State University men’s hockey team rallied back, scoring five consecutive goals to beat Alaska-Fairbanks 6-3. In a game where many fans predicted a blowout win, SCSU found themselves down 3-0 late in the first period. The Huskies were able to bend without breaking, closing the gap on the Alaska-Fairbanks lead before taking the lead in the third period. Alaska-Fairbanks took an early lead, scoring at the 1:08 mark of the first period after Kylar Hope buried a rebound into the back of the net following a shot from teammate Colton Leiter. Minutes later, the Nanooks would expand on that lead, after Ryker Leer carried the puck into the Huskies zone and fired a shot from the top of the right-side circle, beating Smith high, blocker side. Down 2-0, the Huskies started to apply some pressure, creating some quality scoring chances on the power…

The boys are back in town

You may remember the last name “Poehling” if you recall the 2015 Minnesota high school state hockey tournament. The three brothers from Lakeville North, Ryan, Jack, and Nick Poehling helped lead the Panthers to a 32-0 season, and a state title. All three brothers are now freshmen at St. Cloud State and have been playing on the same line early this season. The relationship these brothers share is something most teammates never have the chance to experience. “I just think growing up together has helped a lot.” said Jack Poehling. “We’re not only brothers but best friends as well.” The only time the three brothers have been separated was when Ryan was in his junior year of high school, and the twins Nick and Jack went to Green Bay to play junior hockey for the Gamblers. “On and off of the ice we’re never really separated.” said Ryan Poehling. “I…

SCSU Men’s Hockey: Meet the 2016-17 Freshmen

in SCSU Sports/Sports by

After an overall record of 31-9-1 last season and the loss of seven seniors, a first line defenseman, and the program’s star goaltender, the incoming class for the SCSU men’s hockey team have some very important spots to fill. Many of the team’s top-line players left, either after graduating or signing pro contracts, and they made up 52.6 percent of the team’s goals and points scored. The power play will be seeing plenty of changes. The Huskies were second in the nation in power-play goal percentage (29.5), and a majority of head coach, Bob Motzko’s, go-to players for the power-play are gone; Prow, Kossila, Morley, Benik, Russell, and Murray.  After Charlie Lindgren signed an NHL contract with the Montreal Canadiens following his junior season, possibly the most important question on the line is who will be the starting goaltender for the Huskies. With a new season brings a new team and…
