The Society of Professional Journalists Mark of Excellence Award recognized the University Chronicle from region 6 for Best Independent Online Student Publication.
The award is given in honor of best collegiate journalism for the year. Region 6 is made up of Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin.
The spring conference was in Minneapolis this past weekend, at which time award recipients were recognized for their work. Organizations that placed first move on to compete for the national Mark of Excellence Award. Twelve regions compete nationally.
According to the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ), the work produced by organizations entering the competition are judged by journalism professionals with at least three years experience.
SPJ released a statement: “The awards honor the best in student journalism. As such, judges were directed to choose only those entries they felt were outstanding work worthy of such an honor.”
For student media organizations, divisions are based on enrollment, including graduate and undergraduate. Colleges with 10,000 students or more are considered large schools.
National winners will hear from the Society of Professional Journalists later this spring and will receive recognition at Excellence in Journalism Sept. 18 through 20 in New Orleans, La.
