St. Cloud State University is welcoming in a new provost and vice president for Academic Affairs July 1, 2015. Ashish Vaidya will be joining SCSUs faculty all the way from Los Angeles, where he was serving the same position at California State University, Los Angeles. In his position, he served as a special adviser to the president for regional economic development.
Vaidya will be replacing Devinder Malhotra, who served as provost at St. Cloud State University for five years before leaving this summer. Malhotra will continue on to serve as interim president of Metropolitan State University in the Twin Cities.
For the time being, Richard Green is currently filling the position. Green is a retired university administrator, who recently served as the interim vice president for Academic Affairs at Albany State University in Georgia. He acts as the University’s chief academic officer and serves as the institutional leader in the president’s absence.
As the chief academic officer, Vaidya will be overseeing a program that contains over 200 majors and minors, including approximately 800 faculty members and over 15,000 students. The position oversees academic activities including personnel, budgets, various programs and priorities.
This should be no undertaking for Vaidya, as he was responsible for strategic planning, accreditation, student success and enrollment management, faculty development and recruitment, resource management, as well as other initiatives. In an earlier statement, Vaidya regarded financial management focus to be highlighted on the top of the agenda.
Vaidya has an extensive background in economics, as he graduated with a degree in economics from St. Xavier’s College in Mumbai, India, as well as the University of Mumbai. He earned his master’s degree in addition to a doctorate in economics from the University of California, Davis.
Initially, he began as a professor of economics at California State, then at Los Angeles, followed by Channels Islands. Earl H. Potter III, St. Cloud State President, expressed his excitement about adding Vaidya onto the team in a statement from a press release.
“It’s not often that we have the opportunity to bring in an academic leader who has a track record in the same position at another institution,” he said. “Dr. Vaidya will provide key leadership to St. Cloud State as we look to refining our academic offerings to best meet the needs of central Minnesota and beyond.”
Vaidya is also enthused to be joining SCSUs leadership team. “I look forward to helping the university collaborate with community partners to meet the educational, economic, social, and cultural needs of our region and state,” he said. “St. Cloud State is ideally positioned to take advantage of community-university partnerships to develop new innovative programs that advance our mission of preparing students for life, work and citizenship in the 21st century.”
Green, the temporary provost, reported on Friday, Dec. 5, that in the short time he’s been there, a lot has been accomplished and he is looking forward to the work there is yet to do.
