Kendrick Lamar’s new album: what we know and what to expect

After releasing the EP untitled unmastered in early 2016, rap and music fans alike have been starving for new music by the king of the rap game – Kendrick Lamar. And, in a surprise, he has recently released two amazing singles, and has announced an album that will be released on April 7.

On March 23, the rap industry was shook up, as Kendrick Lamar dropped a new track out of nowhere. That morning, Kendrick had deleted all of his prior Instagram posts, and he uploaded a single image with the Roman numeral “IV”, which many thought signified that his fourth album would be coming. Instead, that night, Kendrick dropped a new track titled, “The Heart Part Four.”

This song was one of Kendrick’s most unique that he has ever released. The song starts off with an easy-going, pop type of vibe. After the first chorus, the beat switches to a hard hitting style, and Kendrick begins to go in. Many have speculated that Kendrick was coming at fellow rappers Drake and Big Sean in this song, as those two have thrown shade at him in a couple of their songs as well. Kendrick also dubs himself the “greatest rapper alive,” which many believe to be true.

Near the end of the track, Kendrick says, “y’all got ‘til April the 7th to get y’all s*** together.” This is insinuating that he will be releasing another album on April 7. With that date in mind, many fans were heavily anticipating that day. Yet, again, Kendrick decided to drop another surprise single on March 30 titled “Humble”. This song is pretty different from what Kendrick has released in the past, but in a very good way.

“Humble” has a very ‘trap’ type of feel to it. The beat is very fast, and it’s different from Kendrick’s usual lyrical-driven music. It was a welcome change. Perhaps the most notable part of this song dropping was the amazing video. The cinematography in this video is top notch, and it impressed the masses. Many popular artists tweeted out their support of the track.

“Shouts out to @kendricklamar for the video of the year, that was amazing homie,” tweeted rapper Lil Yachty.

Katy Perry tweeted a link to the video, with the caption, “THIS VIDEO IS COMING FOR EVERYONE.”

It will be very interesting to see what Kendrick does with his next project. Section .80, Kendrick’s first album, was an album that saw his breakthrough, and the album focused a lot on beats and lyricism. Good Kid, M.A.A.D City, Kendrick’s second studio album, cemented Kendrick’s spot as an all-time elite rapper. That record focused on telling a story of growing up in Compton, California. His most recent and perhaps most critically-acclaimed album, To Pimp a Butterfly, zeroed in on social inequality in America. This album won Kendrick multiple Grammy’s as well.

With Kendrick’s three previous albums carrying such variety, along with the two tracks he has released so far, there’s no telling what he may be cooking up for this album. Is it going to be jazzy and funky like To Pimp a Butterfly? Is it going to have a structured story line like Good Kid, M.A.A.D City? It remains to be seen.

Another interesting thing to think about are who could potentially be the featured artists for this album. Kendrick has never relied too heavily on features, with only a couple on each of his albums, but some of those features have been incredible. Record label mate, Jay Rock has one of the best verses on Good Kid, M.A.A.D City when he appears on “Money Trees”. Rap legend Dr. Dre also appears on that album, delivering an incredible verse on “Compton.”

Regardless of what this album will be like, all eyes will be on Kendrick Lamar. Considered by many to be one of the greatest rappers of all time, this next album could cement Kendrick as the greatest ever. He’s got big shoes to fill in that regard, but it’s possible that he could do it. One thing’s for sure – we’ve got until April the 7th to ‘get our s*** together.’
