The Saint Cloud State women’s hockey team (8-7-1, 4-7-1 WCHA) is in the midst of the program’s longest winning streak. The team is on pace to finish with the best record since the 2009-2010 team, which finished with an overall record of 15-14-8. The 2009-2010 team recorded multiple wins over top ten teams and are the last team to finish with double digits in the win category.
This year’s team may not have any victories over top ten teams yet, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t as good if not better than the 2009-2010 squad. Senior goalie Katie Fitzgerald has been a major factor not only in the Huskies winning streak but in their success overall this season.
Fitzgerald has been especially impressive during the last six games, holding opponents to 8 goals compared to 20 goals scored by the Huskies during the streak. Fitzgerald was recently rewarded for her hard work by being named WCHA defensive player of the month.
This year’s team has the potential to be the best in program history. They play with a tenacious defense and crisp passing on offense. Though Minnesota and Wisconsin likely stand in the way, I wouldn’t be surprised if this team found their way into the NCAA tournament. I hope this success brings more fans to the rink as this team deserves a much larger audience.
The Huskies will try to keep the streak alive as they travel to Duluth this weekend to take on the University of Minnesota-Duluth (6-10-0, 3-7-0 WCHA).
