With their 4-1 win over Ohio State (5-9-0, 3-9-0 WCHA), Saint Cloud State (7-7-1, 5-7-1 WCHA) broke out the brooms as they achieved their second straight series sweep. In a tightly contested first period, the Huskies were able to capitalize on a couple of power plays. SCSU would score early on a power play goal by Julia Tylke for their first score of the evening. After an aggressive back and forth, Vanessa Spataro put the Huskies up 2-0 with another power play goal. The Huskies tough defense held off the Buckeyes to take a 2-0 lead into the second period.
In the second period it was the Buckeyes turn to take advantage of penalties by the Huskies. Just seconds into a power play, OSU found the net for their first score of the game. OSU’s defense smothered the Huskies and prevented them from getting off a clean shot for much of the period. Unable to add to their lead, SCSU held a one goal lead going into the last period.
Penalties again played a large role in the third. SCSU would take advantage of another power play as Alyssa Erickson scored the Huskies third power play goal of the game. After fending off several attacks by OSU, the Huskies would add one more goal to clinch the game with a score of 4-1. Husky goalie Katie Fitzgerald deserves some praise as she made several great saves to dash any hopes the Buckeyes had of a comeback.
The Saint Cloud State Huskies (5-9-0, 3-9-0 WCHA) look to continue their winning ways next weekend as they travel to St. Charles, MO to take on Lindenwood University (3-8-2, 1-3-2 CHA).
