Family Weekend is one of the big attractions for students and families at SCSU that is set to get underway this weekend. The event is being put on by SCSU’s Department of Campus Involvement and kicks off Friday, September 12.
Registration for families runs from 5:00p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with the Atwood Underground becoming available for free if you’re with a registered family at the same time. More options to occupy the Friday schedule include a special showing of “UP”, stuff-a-husky, and crafts in the Atwood Theatre. Maleficent will be showing at 8:00p.m. and 10:30 p.m.
Campus Rec will be putting on the St. Cloud Vibe 5K Color Run Saturday morning starting in K lot at 8:00 a.m. with the first wave of runners taking off at 9:00 a.m. Another window for registration opens from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on Saturday for those families that elect to come later in the weekend.
The welcome breakfast and Resource Fair starts at 10:00 a.m. with President Earl Potter addressing the families.
One of the favorite events of the weekend gets buzzing at 11:00 a.m. when families engage in a friendly game of Family Feud.
“Family Feud was really successful last year,” Assistant Director of Student Organizations, Meghan Dingmann said. “It was great to see families get involved and students were really engaged. Sometimes there is a disconnect between students and families, but it brought everyone together and was a lot of fun. Even last week people were mentioning how much they enjoyed it and were looking forward to it this year.” Another opportunity to get families involved in the friendly competition of Family Feud starts at 1:00 p.m.
After a dismal start to their season, the Husky football team will seek redemption in front of the home crowd at 3:00 p.m. at Husky Stadium against Wayne State. Tailgating with the Deans will take place before the game, starting at noon and running until game time.
Following the SCSU football game against Wayne State, families are encouraged to stick around for an exclusive music performance by The Smithereens. The concert is set to go underway at 7:00 p.m. or 30 minutes after the game.
Stuff-a-husky, family photo booths, The Underground, daily showings of Maleficent, and planetarium shows will continue through out the day for those who aren’t interested in the Husky Stadium events.
Sunday Brunch, held at the Green Mill Restaurant will run from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. The SCSU Wind Ensemble concert wraps up the weekend of fun at 3:00 p.m. in the Ritsche Auditorium. For more information on the event contact the Department of Campus Involvement.
