Clothed in Pink, Participants Walk For a Cause

Events/Gallery/News by

The annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event took place on October 14, 2017, as community members of all ages came bundled up in pink. A chilly temperature made the three-mile walk a bit long, but participants displayed smiles the entire route. Families full of young, old, survivors, and friends gathered to spread awareness and walk for a great cause. Several teams coordinated t-shirts and raised thousands of dollars to support Breast Cancer. Dance and cheer teams of SCSU cheered on participants throughout the walk around St. Cloud State University campus. Water stations were available at both the one mile and two-mile marker with volunteers also clothed in pink. A speaker informed guests that about 1 in 8 women will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime, therefore donations can be used to further research, and provide help and comfort to those battling at the moment.   All…

Guillermo del Toro gets spooky with ‘At Home With Monsters’ exhibit at Mia

Guillermo del Toro’s, “At Home With Monsters” exhibit at the Minneapolis Institute of Art (Mia) was more than a traditional art exhibit with only one theme and one focus. And it was more than just monsters. It invoked the inspiration and beauty behind peculiar, quirky and horrific characters. “Where does creativity come from?” Was the goal behind the exhibition, Kayin Feldman, President of Mia and the spark behind this carefully curated exhibit said. From a purely visual perspective, the “At Home With Monsters” exhibit is a collaboration of del Toro’s immense collection of art, movie props, books, artifacts, comics and sculptures from Bleak House – his two-story “man cave” in Los Angeles that houses over 10,000 items, collected over his entire lifetime. Looking in further, the exhibit is really a collection of influence and vision that del Toro has had throughout his life. He worked closely with Mia to curate…

Skate Unity Fundraiser creates art and opportunities for area skaters

The Skate Unity fundraiser, hosted by The Youth Shelter Supply (YSS), started on March 24 and ran through Saturday evening, April 1 at The White Horse in downtown St. Cloud. For the 11th year, the event marks an opportunity for local artists to showcase their skills while helping others in the community. YSS handed out blank skateboards for artists to design on and the finished products were put up for sale during a silent auction all week. All of the money raised from the auction this year will go towards the St. Cloud Skate Camp – a free summer camp for kids learning to skate. We caught up with some of the artists to find out more about their motives and designs. Art was something which was long a part of many of the artist’s lives, and the event gave them an opportunity to further express themselves. Madison Holler, a…

Huskies Complete the Sweep, Motzko’s 250th Win

Gallery/SCSU Sports/Sports by

The St. Cloud State Huskies (15-14-1, 9-10-1 NCHC) were able to complete the weekend sweep of the Miami University Redhawks (9-13-6, 5-9-4 NCHC) after a 3-1 victory at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center Saturday night, giving Bob Motzko his 250th victory as head coach of the Huskies. With the game tied at one going into the third period, the Huskies took control late after Jake Wahlin was able to score in the dying minutes of the game to give the Huskies the win, and with it, their first weekend sweep since early November against Colorado College. The Huskies have struggled to win back-to-back games as of late, winning their last five games taking place on Friday, but failing to win a Saturday game. Wahlin was very pleased to finally get that weight off his team’s shoulders. “This [win] was huge for our team, and I think it’s going to be…
