The fourth-ranked SCSU Huskies men’s ice hockey team were defeated 6-2 by the unranked Western Michigan University Broncos at Lawson Arena in Kalamazoo, Mich. on Friday, Jan. 15.
Western Michigan opened the scoring with a goal by Ronnie Attard at 6:26 of the first period making it 1-0 Broncos.
In the second period, the Huskies would score their first goal of the weekend when Sam Hentges scored at 6:46 of the second period to tie the game at 1. The goal was Hentges’ fifth of the season and was assisted by Spencer Meier and Kevin Fitzgerald.
Western Michigan would not let the game remain tied for long as seven minutes later Broncos forward Tim Washe scored to make it 2-1 Broncos. Then at 18:29 of the second Western Michigan would extend their lead to 3-1 with a goal by Scooter Brickley.
In the third period with the Huskies down 3-1, alternate captain Kevin Fitzgerald cut the deficit to 1 with a goal at 4:18 of the third. The goal was Fitzgerald’s fifth of the season and was assisted by Sam Hentges.
The Western Michigan Broncos would not go away; however, as they would add two goals in a one-minute span with goals from Josh Passolt and Ethen Frank extending their lead to 5-2 with twelve minutes left in regulation. Huskies goaltender David Hrenak was pulled after these goals and Jaxon Castor entered the game in relief.
The Broncos would add one more goal to their tally when Paul Washe scored to make it 6-2 and close the scoring for the evening.
The Huskies were outshot 25-23, David Hrenak was given the loss in the game making 17 saves on 22 shots. Jaxon Castor made 2 saves on 3 shots in relief.
The two teams would play again the following night.
The fourth-ranked SCSU Huskies were defeated 3-1 by the unranked Western Michigan Broncos at Lawson Arena in Kalamazoo, Mich. on Jan. 16.
The Western Michigan Broncos would score a minute and a half into the game with a goal by Cole Gallant making it 1-0.
The remainder of the first would be scoreless however and five minutes into the second period Ethen Frank scored his second of the weekend to extend the Broncos lead to 2-0.
The SCSU Huskies would get on the board with a goal from Nolan Walker to cut the Broncos lead to 2-1. Walker’s goal was his third of the season and was assisted by Jared Cockrell.
The remainder of the game would be scoreless until the Broncos forward Ethen Frank scored an empty net goal to make the final score 3-1 in favor of the Broncos.
The Huskies outshot the Broncos 29-20 but struggled to get anything past Western Michigan goalie Alex Aslanidis all weekend long. David Hrenak was the starting goaltender for the Huskies and was credited with a loss, Hrenak made 15 saves on 17 shots.
The Huskies will look to bounce back this weekend Jan. 22-23 against the University of Miami (Ohio) RedHawks at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
